Fusion-Materials Research

The mission of the PISCES materials research program is to study the physics of plasma interaction, and optimize performance of materials in contact with plasma at conditions typifying the edge regions of present day and future plasma confinement devices. Issues related to the longevity of the material, as well as influences on the incident plasma comprise aspects of our research. In general, the PISCES program addresses these issues in two ways. The first approach being from the point of view of understanding and improving the performance of the materials themselves, and the second is from the point of view of controlling and altering the way in which the plasma transports power and particles to the wall.  To understand the interaction of materials in contact with high-energy plasmas, the PISCES materials research program employs state-of-the-art materials diagnostic techniques in its investigation of plasma-materials interactions.
